If you love history
Bursa is one city that definitely knows its history. It’s been inhabited by the Greeks, Byzantines, and Ottomans, and each of them has left its mark on the city. The ancient Greeks were actually the first of the three to establish a settlement in the area, and Bursa played an important role in the Byzantine Empire as a centre of trade and commerce.
During the Ottoman Empire, Bursa became the first capital city of the empire, and the city flourished as an important cultural and economic centre. You can still see the remnants of that time today, with many of the city’s most iconic landmarks dating back to this period. One of the most impressive is the Grand Mosque (Ulu Camii), which is a stunning example of early Ottoman architecture. And if you’re interested in shopping, make sure to visit Koza Han, a silk bazaar that was built in the 15th century.

Bursa is also home to many museums that showcase the city’s rich heritage, like the Zindankapi Museum and the Bursa Archaeological Museum. You can even explore the city’s historic tombs, such as the tombs of Osmangazi and Orhangazi, two of the early Ottoman rulers which I mention in another post here.

All in all, Bursa’s historical heritage is a testament to the city’s important role throughout the centuries as a centre of culture, trade, and politics. Whether you’re into ancient Greek history, Byzantine architecture, or Ottoman culture, Bursa has a lot to offer for those interested in exploring its fascinating past.
If you love to relax
Bursa is well-known for its thermal baths or Turkish hammams, which are a very important part of Turkish culture. If you haven’t experienced one yet, let me tell you what it’s like. It’s a communal bathhouse with separate sections for men, and women and some have family rooms. Once you enter, you’ll be in a warm and humid room where you relax and sweat. Then, you’ll be scrubbed down and massaged by a professional staff. They have small pools filled with hot thermal water. It’s an invigorating and relaxing experience that you don’t want to miss.

Thermal waters are believed to have many health benefits. The mineral-rich waters are known to help with a variety of ailments, such as skin conditions, respiratory problems, and rheumatism. Plus, the hot water and steam of a Turkish hammam can help to reduce stress and improve circulation. And it’s no wonder why people have been using thermal water for medicinal purposes since ancient times.
Always check with your health advisor if you are pregnant or have health issues before going to a hamam. Always check and follow the hamam's instructions before use.
Hammams in Bursa offer a range of services, from basic baths to more luxurious treatments, so you can choose what suits your needs and budget. Whether you’re looking for a quick and simple bath or a full day of pampering, the thermal baths in Bursa are the perfect place to relax and unwind. You can choose from historical hammams like the “Eski Kaplica Hamam” in Çekirge or more recent ones with more entertaining facilities for the kids like the hamam at the “Almira Hotel”.
For the love of Iskender Kebab!
If you’re a foodie, you won’t want to miss out on trying the delicious Iskender kebab when you visit Bursa. This mouth-watering dish is a staple of Turkish cuisine. And this is the one dish I miss when I’m away from Bursa.
It is named after its creator, a chef named Iskender Efendi who lived in Bursa during the late 19th century (Ottoman Empire period). The dish was reportedly invented as a way to use up leftover lamb from his restaurant. Today, the Iskender kebab is considered one of the most iconic dishes of Bursa.

So what makes Iskender kebab so special? Well, firstly, the meat is cooked to perfection on a vertical rotisserie, then scattered on a bed of pide bread. But what really takes it to the next level is the rich tomato sauce and melted butter that is poured over it. It’s a flavour that will satisfy your taste buds. And don’t forget the garnishes! The yoghurt and grilled vegetables are the perfect complement to the savoury meat and sauce.
If you’re visiting Bursa, be sure to seek out the original Iskender kebab restaurant for an authentic taste of this iconic dish. You won’t regret it!
