Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and is a delightful blend of old-world charm and modern wonders. It offers an array of family-friendly attractions, cultural experiences, and captivating sights that will captivate young and old alike. From strolling along the iconic Nyhavn harbour to exploring the magical Tivoli Gardens, this city is a treasure trove of unforgettable memories.
Join me as we embark on a journey of discovery, uncovering the city’s top highlights, and venturing on exciting day trips to neighbouring Malmo and Kronborg Castle.
Day 1: Welcome to Copenhagen!
The fantastic city of Copenhagen is brimming with excitement and joy, and we’re about to dive right in.
Arriving in Copenhagen: Let the Fun Begin!
First things first, you’ve just landed at Copenhagen Airport, and I bet you’re feeling the buzz already! From this bustling airport, you’ve got a bunch of travel options to get you into the city centre. Take your pick from trains, or buses, or even hop into a taxi or whatever floats your boat.
Settling in: Your Home Away from Home in Copenhagen
Now, let’s sort out your nest for the next few days. Copenhagen’s got your back with an array of family-friendly accommodations that’ll suit your crew to a tee. How about a cosy boutique hotel or a snazzy apartment? We stayed in an Air BnB in the suburb as we travelled by car and needed a space to park it. It was very nice and relaxing, away from the city centre and to get a feel of non-touristic Danish life.
Once you’ve settled in, take a peek around your new hood. Check the family-friendly amenities nearby like parks for the little ones, coffee shops for the grown-ups and nearby supermarkets for your food shopping. And you’re all set for a comfortable stay!

First-Day Frolics: Time for Exploration
For day one, I suggest taking it easy as there is no need to rush around. Take strolls, embrace the fresh air, and soak up the local charm.
Explore a neighbourhood at your own pace, and you’ll stumble upon some treasures. Wave hello to the friendly locals, pop into cute boutiques, and don’t forget to taste some scrumptious local treats along the way.

We explored Nørrebro because we found a halal restaurant with good reviews there without knowing anything about this neighbourhood. And what a surprise it was! First off, the main street, “Nørrebrogade” was filled with halal restaurants, modest clothes shops and a cool park, “Superkilen Park”. But then, once we found a place to park the car and strolled the streets, we realised that it wasn’t just the Muslim quarter, but the really hip, multicultural and eclectic part of Copenhagen.
Whichever neighbourhood you choose for your first day, you’ll find plenty of picturesque spots for family photos, so snap away and make some awesome memories!
Get Ready for More Fun in Copenhagen!
Well, that’s day one in the bag! And we’re just getting started on our amazing Copenhagen family journey. There’s so much more to come, from iconic sights to mouthwatering food. Keep those smiles on, because we’ve got some fantastic times ahead.
Keep reading for Day 2, where we’ll dive into Copenhagen’s family-friendly attractions. We’re talking about the famous Nyhavn and an exciting canal cruise that’ll have the kids beaming with joy.
Day 2: Exploring Copenhagen’s Family-Friendly Attractions
Day 2 is all about discovering the family-friendly gems that Copenhagen has in store for us. Get ready for a boatload of fun as we dive into one of the city’s most famous attractions!
Nyhavn: A Splash of Color and Copenhagen History
First stop, Nyhavn, the heart and soul of Copenhagen’s waterfront that’s all over the Internet. This vibrant harbour boasts a kaleidoscope of colourful buildings that’ll have your camera clicking away. Did you know that Nyhavn dates back to the 17th century? It’s steeped in history, and you can feel the old-world charm in every cobblestone.

Pay attention to the old boat harboured along, they are a real historical treasure. Most of them will have a displayed board relating their history and date.
Now, here’s a treat for your taste buds! Nyhavn is teeming with family-friendly dining options. From classic Danish dishes to international delights, there’s something to satisfy every craving. So, grab a seat, soak in the views, and indulge in some mouthwatering treats. Beware, it is very popular and busy.
Canal Cruise: Glide Along Copenhagen Waterways
It’s time for a delightful canal cruise! Set sail along Copenhagen’s picturesque waterways, and let the magic unfold before your eyes. This leisurely boat trip is perfect for all ages, and you’ll be treated to stunning views of the city’s iconic landmarks. We didn’t book anything as it was off-peak. We just hopped on to one canal boat that was stationed on the harbour and paid about £5 each for an hour’s trip.

As you glide along the canals, you’ll pass under quaint bridges (keep your hands in) and see famous sights like the impressive Amalienborg Palace, the Grand Opera House and the Little Mermaid. Keep your eyes peeled for some hidden spots that’ll make you go “Wow!”.
It’s the perfect time to take notes on the sites you would like to add to your bucket list and learn about the independent community “Christiana”.
Family-Oriented Activities around Nyhavn
The fun doesn’t stop at Nyhavn – it’s a hub of family-friendly activities! Watch in awe as street performers entertain with acts, creating laughter and amazement for kids and adults alike. From talented musicians to skilled magicians, you’re in for a show-stopping treat in nearby Strøget where you can also find the Guinness World Records Museum!
You are within walking distance from Amalienborg, which is the official residence of the Danish royal family, including the palace museum.

And how about a sweet treat to top it all off? Nyhavn’s ice cream parlours are an absolute hit with the little ones (and the grown-ups too!). Pick your favourite flavour, and enjoy a delicious cone as you stroll along the harbour.
There’s More Adventure Ahead in Copenhagen!
What an incredible day of exploring family-friendly attractions! Nyhavn has truly stolen our hearts!
Hold on tight for Day 3, where we’ll step into the magical world of Tivoli Gardens, filled with thrilling rides, enchanting shows, and even more family fun. Let the excitement build, because there’s plenty more to come!
Day 3: Tivoli Gardens – A Magical Day for the Whole Family
Today, we’re stepping into a world of wonder and enchantment at the one and only Tivoli Gardens. Be ready for a long day filled with laughter, excitement, and pure family fun!
Overview of Tivoli Gardens: Where Magic Comes Alive
It’s an iconic amusement park that has been dazzling visitors since 1843, and it’s not even the oldest amusement park in Denmark! Yep, you heard that right – this place is steeped in history and has that timeless charm that’ll whisk you away to a magical realm. Now, the rides are not that old but they have been designed with the same old theme.

As you step through the gates, you’ll find yourself in a fairytale wonderland; this is the place that inspired Walt Disney to design Disneyland. Tivoli’s stunning gardens, adorned with twinkling lights and colourful flowers, create a whimsical atmosphere that’ll leave you feeling like you’ve entered a storybook.
Rides and Attractions: Adventures for Everyone
Hold on tight, Tivoli has a thrilling ride for every member of the family! From classic carousels for the little ones to heart-pounding roller coasters for the daredevils, there’s no shortage of adrenaline-pumping fun here. They had one of the highest rides I have ever been on! I didn’t go on them for a second time but it was great for the views over Copenhagen, especially during sunset.

Our favourite rides were the “Fatamorgana” for the views, the “Milky Way Express” which we went on five times, “The Rollercoaster” which is one of the oldest in the world, and “The Demon” where I heard the most screams!
If you’re not into thrills? No worries because Tivoli has plenty of gentle rides for the faint of heart like the “Dragon Boats” or “The Vintage Cars” and more.
Shows and Events: Entertainment Galore
But wait, there’s more! Tivoli’s got a dazzling lineup of shows and events that’ll keep the family entertained all day long. You won’t want to miss the captivating performances, from vibrant musicals to mesmerizing acrobatics.

Tivoli was famous for its spectacular fireworks displays but this sadly seems to have stopped. But be sure to stick around till the evening to witness the light show. Also, the park takes on a new atmosphere when it lights up in the evening.
A Day to Remember
What an enchanting day we’ve had at Tivoli Gardens! It’s no wonder this place has been a favourite of families for generations. From thrilling rides to spellbinding shows, Tivoli has truly cast its magic on us.
Now, for the nitty-gritty, check the website first to familiarise yourself with it or buy your tickets. You might want to get the package option. I would recommend getting the Tivoli app to understand the different ticket options, have the map for the day and be able to download your ride photos as well as have the show’s schedule.
Don’t forget to pack your backpack with drinks and snacks as you will spend hours there. You will be happy to know that there are halal options in the park but all food and refreshments are pricey as expected.
Day 4: A Day Trip Adventure to Malmö, Sweden
We’re crossing borders for an exciting day trip to the charming city of Malmo, just across a long bridge from Copenhagen. We had doubts at first but we asked ourselves: “When will we be so close to Sweden again?” and jumped at the opportunity.
Preparing for the Day Trip: Let’s Get Going!
Before we set off, let’s get prepped for it. Getting to Malmo is a breeze, with several transportation options at your disposal. Hop on a train from Copenhagen Central Station, and in about forty minutes, you’ll find yourselves in the heart of Malmo.
Check out the departure times and ticket options to suit your family’s schedule, the trains run day and night.
If you go by car like us, you have to pay the toll for the Ørensund Bridge which is a hefty price. You can save a third of the price on one return trip by getting the Ørensundgo membership. You have to pay for a yearly membership but then, you get about a 65% discount on the toll. So you already save money on your first return trip. You can add two cars to your membership and change up to five cars for the year. Now, it is automatically renewed after a year, so don’t forget to cancel it before it happens.
Don’t forget your passports, and your currencies and check your internet options because we’re crossing borders!
Top Family-Friendly Attractions in Malmö: A World of Wonders
Once we arrive in Malmö, the fun begins! This vibrant city has a treasure trove of family-friendly attractions waiting to be explored.
Start your adventure at Folkets Park, a beloved oasis for families with its playgrounds, mini-golf, skateboard ramp and picnic spots. Let the kids run wild, and maybe even join in on the fun yourselves!

Next, head to Malmö’s iconic Turning Torso. It’s an architectural marvel that’ll have your little ones in awe. Don’t worry; you can’t miss it as it’s the tallest building in Scandinavia! My kids were particularly taken into spotting Flanders fishes in the stream next to it.
To dive into Malmö’s cultural side, visit the Malmö Museum in the Malmö castle, where interactive exhibitions and child-friendly activities abound. Learning about history has never been this much fun!
Family-Friendly Dining in Malmo: A Treat for Your Taste Buds
All that exploring can work up an appetite, right? Malmö has got you covered with its array of family-friendly dining spots.
The city boasts several charming town squares that offer a glimpse into its vibrant culture and community life. These squares, each with its unique character, are perfect spots to soak in the local atmosphere, satisfy your appetite (including halal), and enjoy the city’s ambience.
1. Stortorget: The Heart of Malmö
Stortorget, Malmö’s main square, is a bustling hub surrounded by historic buildings, including a quaint pharmacy. The grand architecture and cobbled streets provide a picturesque backdrop. Whether you’re strolling through or resting at the feet of Charles X Gustav’s sculpture, the lively energy of Stortorget captures the essence of Malmö.

2. Lilla Torg: A Quaint Haven
Lilla Torg, just a minute’s walk from Stortorget, offers a more intimate setting. With its charming cobblestone paths and colourful facades, it exudes a cosy atmosphere. The square comes alive in the evening, as restaurants spill out onto the square, creating a warm and inviting ambience, and this was my favourite square. Head over early to “Pronto” as this very small café is very popular for its cheesecake.

3. Gustav Adolfs Torg: Tranquility Amidst Elegance
Gustav Adolfs Torg is a peaceful oasis surrounded by neoclassical architecture. Its fountain and ample seating make it a perfect spot to take a break from exploring the city.

A Memorable Day in Malmo
What an incredible day it was in Malmo! Exploring this charming city with the whole family has been a blast, and we’ve soaked up a taste of Swedish culture along the way. The only thing I wish we had planned better was to stop for “Fika”, or a coffee break which is a cultural tradition in Sweden. Unfortunately, we left too late, by five o’clock, the only coffee shops open were in the squares and it was packed. So we sadly decided to give it a miss.
Scroll down to delve into Copenhagen’s rich history with a trip to the majestic Kronborg Castle.
Day 5: Discovering Shakespearean History at Kronborg Castle
Today is for the history buff! We’re stepping back in time to a place of royal tales and Shakespearean legends – the magnificent Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, Denmark.
Preparing for the Kronborg Castle Trip: Ready, Set, Go!
Before we embark on our Shakespearean adventure, let’s get everything in order. Helsingør is just a short train ride away from Copenhagen, making it the perfect day trip destination.
Once we arrive in Helsingør, it’s a short walk to Kronborg Castle, where history awaits to be uncovered.
Exploring the Castle with Family: Tales of Kings and Tragedies
Kronborg Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site that has played a significant role in Danish history. This majestic fortress served as the inspiration for Shakespeare’s renowned play, “Hamlet” and it’s no wonder – the castle exudes an air of mystery and drama.

Inside the castle walls, interactive tours and engaging historical tales bring the past to life. Explore the grand halls and chambers, and imagine the lives of kings and queens who once roamed these very halls. Your little ones will be captivated by the stories of ancient battles and royal intrigue.

Be sure to visit the castle’s casemates, where you can learn about its military history. If you’re feeling brave, descend into the underground tunnels – but watch out for any ghosts from “Hamlet” lurking in the shadows!
Scenic Surroundings and Views
The castle’s location on the edge of the sea added another layer of charm to the experience. The views of the Øresund Strait and the surrounding landscape provided the perfect backdrop for our exploration. We took strolls along the ramparts, taking in the sea breeze and the panoramic vistas. It’s also a very popular spot for fishing. And the kids spent quite some time observing the successful fishing. It was a peaceful escape from the bustling city, and the kids loved spotting ships in the distance and Helsingborg on the Swedish side.

A Day of History and Wonder
Stepping into the pages of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and exploring the history of Danish royalty has been an unforgettable experience.
As our journey in Copenhagen comes to an end, I hope you’ve had an informative time reading this article. From magical amusement parks to medieval castles, Copenhagen has truly left an indelible mark on our hearts.

The weather in Copenhagen can be as diverse as the city’s attractions, so it’s essential to pack wisely. Be sure to bring layers of clothing, as the weather can change throughout the day. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring the city’s charming streets and landmarks.
For families with little ones, don’t forget to pack baby essentials such as diapers, wipes, and snacks. Having a small backpack with essentials can make a big difference during your adventures.

Consider getting a Copenhagen Card, which offers unlimited travel on public transport (including trains to Helsingør and the airport) and free admission to many attractions. Take note that up to two children under 12 years old are free but still require a card. It’s a great way to save time and money while exploring the city’s top spots.

Safety first, folks! Copenhagen is generally a safe city, but it’s always wise to stay vigilant, especially when travelling with family. Keep these simple safety tips in mind to ensure a worry-free journey:
